Hi All,

Looking forward, I'm wondering what more can be done with eBoostr. This can not only be an interesting discussion for us users, but also very useful for the development team.

Looking years in the future, more and more people will have SSD hard drives, and fast USB 3.0 flash drives to supplement it with Windows built in Readyboost. I'm wondering whether eBoostr's primary distinction will become it's ability to have a customizable RAM cache, and the caching of larger files than ReadyBoost.

There are still several years of mechanical hard drives and XP users before SSDs and USB 3.0 takes over. In the meantime I'm curious what everyone thinks about where eBoostr should focus it's development energy next.

Right now I don't know ... but I'll will be thinking about it. What do you think?

Thanks,

Robert

The OS is Windows7 64bit
I create the cache on my 2G Intel Turbo Memory
It takes 50 seconds to start up before using eBoostr.
And 40 seconds after using eBoostr.

The data is an approximate one. Why don't eBoostr provides a tool to count the start time?

It seems that for the moment eBoostr is incompatible with the Intel Rapid Storage Manager (an apparent upgrade from the Matrix Storage Manager). When the Rapid Storage is installed, the eBoostr service fails to start. However, downgrading to the Matrix Storage fixes the issue.

EDIT: My apologies.
By choosing to locate my filestat.dat on my Turbo Memory, it ended up not being to find the file with the new drivers as it didn't show the existence of the drive. Therefore, by reinstalling only the Turbo Memory driver, I regained access to the Turbo Memory drive, assigned it a drive letter, and eBoostr was happy to create a new filestat.dat and begin chugging away.

Keep up the good work!

Recently, it seems that when I do a cache rebuild after waking from hibernate, eBoostr invalidates every cache and rebuilds them from zero. With almost 2GB worth of cache space, it takes quite a while for it to fill up every device (not to mention wearing out flash read/write cycles).

Does anyone else have the same issue? Is there a solution to this issue?

It first appeared after installing eBoostr 4 RTM, and I have since rolled back to RC, but with the same results. This is unlikely an eBoostr fault and more so a simple error on my part, but I can't seem to pinpoint what causes it?

[Conflict between Google Japanese IME and eBoostr most likely resolved, as far as I tested RC (Build 553]

■ [Overall] I've been participated in testing eBoostr Ver 4 Beta since Build 529. In my cases of each Beta Build testing, eBoostr Ver 4's performance was very good and I did not encounter any problems except two cases - 1) Build 538: Wins Sys 32 blue screen when using Kingston Data Traveler 2GB USB flash memory, and 2) Build 547: Conflict with Google Japanese IME, unable to control the task tray control panel icon. No. 1) was posted in Nov 09 ( http://bit.ly/BlueScrn ), supported by one tester's comment for the same problem. Resolution was just to change the flash memory, which worked out, and No. 2) was posted on the Blog on 22 Feb 10 ( http://bit.ly/GGL-IME ), supported by two other testers' comments for the same problems, and is still issue for my PC because the problem existed under Build 551. Well, then, I installed RC (Build 553) and please let me report in this forum how the problem looks like now under the RC.

■ [PC Configuration] My PC is an old one and therefore I appreciate the eBoostr which helped/is helping my PC performance a lot: Dell Dimension 4600C ('03 model), OS XP3 Home Edit., CPU Pentium 4/2.4GH, 2GB RAM, HDD 320GB ST3320820A. Start-up/Task Tray Icon: Avir AntiVir Personal Free, AnVir Task Mgr Free, TVman Plus, and eBoostr. [Caching] USB Flash 2GB and 4GB, and 200MB RAM out of 2GB, totaling 6GB and 200MB.

■ [Interim Evaluation Result] With MS IME, there was/is no problem in the eBoostr task tray control icon - able to operate over the icon. On 20 Mar 10, after installing Build 553 (IME changed to Google's), I rebooted PC - eBoostr was not able to be controlled over its task tray icon. Then, I performed another 3 times reboot test: #2 was same result, #3- eBoostr icon failed to appear on the task tray, #4 same with #1 and 2. I stopped the test. On 21 Mar, today, I did 15 times reboot tests. Interesting! Now, eBoostr Task Tray control pane icon works. The reason for this fix I assume is the Google Japanese IME version up which Google released on 19 Mar. Perphaps, my Google IME was updated today by the Google updater because I confirmed its updated version number today. I will continue my reboot test at least 10 times a day until RC expiration day, to ensure the problem is really fixed, and will put additional comments under this post. All other features' test should be rely on others who have good PCs.

■ [Comment to eBoostr] Trial mode behavior - Time Limitation Pop-up at PC start-up might cause some problems in old PCs if they have many start-up services/programs and entries in the task tray. I can hardly assume such PC users are participated in this RC evaluation.

■ [Voice to Japanese eBoostr User] If any Japanese eBoostr users (especially Google IME user) read this, please put comments on how your situation is. (Let me write it in Japanese)

Did anyone get a free license for taking the time to beta test (as promised)? I was very active in the early days, and haven't heard a thing from the dev team.

Also, I purchased three licenses last Fall and thought the "free updates for a year" would apply to version 4, but now I'm being asked to pay more.

The conclusion to all this beta work is disappointing ... not even a thank you from the dev team.

We test this product for you, Eboostr, having been told that we will receive free licenses. It turns out that, in order to get a license EVEN DURING THE TRIAL PERIOD, we have to restort to laborious hacks. (See various posts.) And no relevant word at all seemingly from Eboostr itself. THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. WHY SHOULD WE HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THIS? Eboostr: SORT IT OUT.

Out of curiosity, I reformatted my 256MB SD card (actually a microSD with adapter) to be NTFS and enabled file compression on the drive. Before, the drive would only hold a 232MB cache file. Now with encryption I can bump that a lot up to 300ish although I'd rather not find out what would happen if a cache rebuild with a lower compression ratio tries to fit in there. As a compromise, I put a 256MB file on there and eBoostr states there is 306MB available of 241MB total. XD

But I digress.

Before turning on file compression eBoostr's random read speed would be approximately 7MB/s. Now, it wanders between 8.5MB/s to 14MB/s. A improvement overall at the cost of processor time and decompression overhead. Nevertheless, after watching Resource Monitor's CPU page during a cache rebuild with my 2.53GHz P8700 locked to 800MHz through RMClock, CPU usage didn't really go up more than 2%.

I haven't managed to pinpoint it to eBoostr yet as I also upgraded to the latest Firefox, but the way it happens is really strange.
Mouse still works while the whole interface is frozen. Stays like that for a while and then mouse pointer freezes as well.

I purchased eboostr in Nov 2009. I have been able to use the betas untill the last one. I had to drop back to version 3 to use eboostr. It states that I have free upgrades until Nov 2010. I am wondering what is going on with this. I have paid full price for this product and should be able to use it. I hope that when the full release comes out that It will take my registration. If not what can I do to solve this problem. I have emailed support about it and they sent me a beta registration that did not work. Again I have full registration why does it not register.

The beta license, the trial license and the extended trial license has expired. Is there a new license that is going to be released? If not, what are the directions to downgrade back to 3.0? Do I need to completely uninstall 4. Do I need to remove the cache drives first. If so, how do I do this since I no longer can get the control panel to remove them?

Can I install 3.0 over the 4.0 and will it automatically downgrade properly.

The current configuration appears to work with my XP without problem. However, the my Beta Key appears to not have automatically updated with latest downloads. When starting up my computer I receive two messages regarding registering the new revisions. The forst informs me that I only have 2 hours trial on each start up and the second informs me that because the download occurred after my key expired the new revision will only work in Demo mode.

Do I need to load a new Beta Key for full functionality of the latest downloads and if so, where can i obtain it from?

I have been testing 4.0 Beta on both desktop (Intel Q6600 w/XP SP3) and netbook (Atom N260 w/XP SP3) for at least four months, and no trouble was identified so far. Here’s my impression of Beta 4.0:

When considering the cold boot time, eBoostr will be the most effective for the system consists of Windows XP, Slow HDD, and fast USB drive on USB 2.0. A person who has such PC will clearly realize this tool is effective.

Once OS is fully loaded, then SD card would become a better cache device than USB drive. Using system RAM for cache may be a bit risky (therefore a warning appears when I try to make the function available, I guess…). For those who have faster PC, I recommend to use Class 6 (or 10) HCSD as cache device, and accelerate applications by adding in the priority list. In this case, we cannot expect drastic change in the boot time because the PC does not recognize SD card until OS loads the card reader driver, unlike USB drive, which is recognized at BIOS level.

I wonder if we can separately manage files when building cache, like; OS system files required at boot stage to USB, and other OS files and application files to SD or RAM. I think this would maximize the benefit of this tool.

Yesterday I added a Lexar SDHC 8GB PRO 133X to eBoostr, tried formatting it with exFat, tried NTFS, and the results were horrible. I had to repair MSOffice and Firefox, Thunderbird almost disappeared, som other programs ended to work so today I finnished removing the SD Card from eBoostr. Tried with and without Superfetch and Prefetch but nothing solved the problem. My system is Windows Vista 32 bit, 3 GB RAM, 1023 MB unmanaged memory and 500 MB NVCache for eBoostr. ReadyBoost and ReadyBoot disabled. I wonder if there is a limit of 4 GB cache for this card to be used with eBoostr?

There is no information available as to extension of trial mode period. It will at least 5 days but could be 15 days at the longest. I put the question on the blog ( http://bit.ly/eBSTRblog_Ext ). I continue my evaluation of eBoostr. Anyone, if you get any information as to the RC trail mode period. Could you please post below this. Please ..... [Bunji94 from Japan]

It is now 26 Mar in Japan. I installed RC on 20 Mar (JST) which is 19 Mar (UST). My RC eBoostr is still running without changing to 2-hour limit mode. The control panel shows“eBoostr is running. Sorry but your trial period has expired.” Please see my request for clarification and screen shot posted on the blog at http://bit.ly/sBSTR_RFC-Trial .

Build 553 working fine on:

Work:
Windows XP Professional SP3 x86
Intel Pentium D 945 3.4 Mhz
2GB Memory 667Mhz

Home:
Windows 7 Ultimate x86
AMD Athlon X2 4200+
6GB RAM 800hz
Only unmanaged memory configured (2.5GB).

I noticed great performance difference with and without eboostr.
With eboostr is very better.

Because encryption obviously requires more CPU cycles, and the strength of the cipher would have some sort of correlation with complexity and processing demand, I am wondering if encryption would reduce the effectiveness of a cache. However, it is also possible that the CPU would be spending time waiting for the hard drive anyway, so the burden of encryption would go unnoticed.

As a side note, I had my only encrypted cache (on an SD card) spontaneously invalidate the entire cache (dropped Cache fill to zero) once during a cache build. This hasn't recurred since, and could simply have been a random occurrence.

I am using a SSD for one of my laptops. It is said that using RAM disk for temporary files of system and internet browser is recommendable to minimize wear of SSD. Do you guys think eBoostr with system memory can do the same work as RAM disk dose? I think if eBoostr causes less hard drive access, it might substitute RAM disk for a system with SSD.
