Fragmentation of memory cards

Hello,

I noticed that after using my two SDHC memory cards with eBoostr, they were fragmented (checked with Windows XP’s own tool Disk Defragment).

Ok, I removed both cards from eBoostr caching and reformatted them. After that I added them again from eBoostr’s control panel. Then I let eBoostr to create a cache to those cards. Then I checked again Disk Defragment tool and was totally surprised… I realised that memory cards were already fragmented although the cache for eBoostr was just created on them. Fragmented file was eBoostr.dat, is this normal? Does Windows XP identify eBoostr’s cache files on memory cards as fragmented although they are not?

The standard Windows way of choosing file placement usually is not the most efficient (contiguous) layout possible. Also, don’t be alarmed if the entire eBoostr.dat file shows up in red. Even if it is split into 99% contiguous and 1% fragmented, Windows Defragmenter will flag it as red.

Try using JKDefrag (freeware Defragmenter) and forcing it to move the eBoostr.dat into a contiguous arrangement. Remember, putting a file at the front/end of a drive only affects magnetic spinning hard drive platters.

Thanks Colonel ONeill for a professional answer! That is nice to hear that there is nothing to be worried about although Windows shows files on memory cards as fragmented.

No problem. And I recommend JKDefrag to replace the standard Windows one. :)

    Happy New Year!
