Add Intel Turbo Memory to eBoostr
By E1000 | January 2nd, 2009 | 10:54 am
I added the Intel Turbo Memory (onboard) to eBoostr and the performance it’s stunning :-)
700 MB write: 31 MB/s
700 MB read with eBoostr: 152 MB/s
700 MB read without eBoostr: 28 MB/s
How to add:
Leave ReadyBoost in de Intel Turbo Memory Console switchted on otherwise you loose the device.
Go to de Vista disk manager and delete the partition (there is no driveletter attached and about 1.4 GB for a 2 GB module). After that create a new fat32 partition on it (quick format) and assign a driveletter (eq. T for Turbo)
In eBoostr it shows up as drive T
When you don’t touch the device and it’s partition, it shows up as NVCACHE but there is no space to use because ReadyBoost has allocated all available space.

That’s an interesting idea. But if we want Intel Turbo Memory back? Will it be possible to do?

No problem.
1. Remove the device from eBoostr.
2. Turn off the ReadyBoost via Turbo Memory Console
3. Reboot
Now you should see that the device has disappeared from the diskmanager
4. Turn on ReadyBoost
5. Reboot again.
Now the device is back as an unpartitioned device and eBboostr shows it up as NVCACHE with no space left.

Thank you!

What software do you use to measure the read/write speed?

I used a simple 100MB file but Sandra 2009 and hd-tune are more sophisticated

Thank you again! :)

Do you also use System Memory or/and flashcard, or Intel Turbo Memory’s ReadyBoost alone?

I only have the Turbo Memory for caching and the internal memory (1GB from 4GB). The internal memory is 4 times faster then the Turbo memory but that depends on your hardware of course. It’s easy to test the effects with the build-in check speed of eBoostr.

I tried your sugestion and here are my results. I may say that I tried several configurations till this last one that is the best as we can see by its astonishing numbers. First: my Intel Turbo Memory is only 1 GB sized. It reserves for ReadyBoost just an half of it. The other half I think is used by Intel Turbo Memory’s Windows ReadyDrive that continues enabled. So, only 506 MB are being used by eBoostr. My laptop has 3 GB of RAM so I use 768 MB for eBoostr System Memory. The 4 GB SD Flash Card now is being used for Windows ReadyDrive. The final results:
Monday, January 05, 2009 23:58:30
Direct access speed: 16.417068 MB/s
Cache enabled access speed: 225.981491 MB/s
Ratio: 13.765033
Absolutely amazing!
I will post this results.
Thank you very much once more time!

Correction: Where I wrote “The 4 GB SD Flash Card now is being used for Windows ReadyDrive“, we must read “The 4 GB SD Flash Card now is being used for Windows ReadyBoost“.

You’r welcome! Very nice results :-)

E1000: Do you have Windows 64 bit? Is your OS capable of using 4 GB RAM? I have Windows 32 bit, 4 GB RAM, and Windows is using only 3 GB.
Did you try to use Intel ReadyBoost with eBoostr System Memory? With this configuration I achieve the best results. Anyway my SD card door is spoiled.

On my laptop with the Turbo Memory I use Vista Home Premium 64bit without Readyboost.
On my PC I have Vista Ultimate 32bit with 2x2GB and 3.3 GB usable for Vista. On this machine I configured eBoostr to use the internal memory and Readyboost is on a fast Apacer Handy Steno USB-stick. The results on the PC are:
Direct Access: 36 MB/s
Cache enabled: 558 MB/s
Ratio: 15.54

I think USB drives are faster than SD. But in laptops these are so much more handly.
Thank you for answering.
